We'll start the semester learning about  CANADA (2 weeks) and artist Emily Carr as we look to nature for inspiration. Students will use watercolor to paint realistic leaves, then paint a woodland landscape as they learn about perspective and value.

Students will use bamboo brushes and rice paper to try "sumi-e", a painting technique of JAPAN.

We will spend 2 weeks on ENGLAND.  First, students will hone their drawing skills as they learn the art of scientific illustration inspired by artist (and Peter Rabbit author), Beatrix Potter.

In part 2 of our lesson on England, students will design either a collage, or a poem using printed text, drawing and watercolor.

Picture
The art of BRAZIL is bright and colorful. Students will use real feathers as their inspiration. They can choose to paint directly on the feather, or use it as a reference.

On to SPAIN.  The first part of this lesson will focus on surrealism. Students will choose between making a fun, folded "exquisite corpse" book, or drawing a surreal scene using a real, everyday object as a prompt.

The second part of our lessons on Spain will teach students the art style of cubism. Students will learn how to portray an image from several different perspectives at once.
